Need for
OCR Conversion as part of e-Discovery
As part of discovery requests in modern litigation large amounts of
paper based documents may be scanned (or imaged) and stores of
electronic files may be converted to PDF.
As part of the scanning or conversion, OCR may not done initially
for cost considerations, because it was not specified, or for other
reasons. Additionally, files converted to PDF from email or
native file formats (e.g., PowerPoint, Word) may include images or graphics that are not text
searchable without OCR. However,
litigation documents must be in text searchable form to be useful in
modern e-Discovery litigation management programs, or as part of a
review on a company of law firm LAN. The contents of image-based PDFs are not searchable without conversion
using OCR.
