Litigation Support Services and Software Systems

The following are definitions related to litigation support services. Defined terms in this glossary are grouped by related concepts.  Please see below for a particular definition.  Pages of other legal definitions associated with related concepts are listed on the left.

 

Document Blowback. The process of printing document images and scanned files to hard copy in mass.

FRCP or Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rules that govern civil actions brought in U.S. Federal district courts. Many states enact similar rules..

'Legal Document Repository' or 'Litigation Document Repository'. An electronic system for data retrieval of documents in connection with litigation. Features may include external hosting, search, retrieval and security.

Legal Document Management. The capture and management of legal documents within a law firm or other organization. Document management usually involves document imaging, workflow, and text retrieval.

Legal Software. Software which helps lawyers to organize and index case files, helps to arrange/schedule docket numbers or catalogue court dates, or assists in the preparation of legal documents or pleadings.

Litigation Case Management. Method of controlling and managing cases within the litigation process, usually with the aid of specially designed case management software to help work with caseloads.

 

Litigation Software. Software to help lawyers prepare and present cases in court. Features include by indexing and organizing documents, database, hierarchical folders, and exhibit preparation.

Litigation Support Services. All activities designed to prepare a lawyer to try a case, including interviewing witnesses, document review, and case preparation. Litigation support involves the organization of documents, including paper-based document management, but increasingly through technology such as litigation support software and systems. Documents are organized into searchable databases for review and production.

Litigation Support Software and Systems. Software and systems to assist lawyers in preparing and presenting cases for trial. Features may include database indexing, organization, notes, timelines, calendaring, and other specialized tools.

Litigation Support Specialist. An individual who manages the litigation support services within a law firm. Litigation support specialist duties combine aspects of the paralegal and information technology professions. Information technology technical skills such as database development and scanning necessary, along with legal assistant skills such as discovery support and document production. The primary focus is the application of litigation support technology (scanning, OCR processing, coding, databases) to the legal requirement of organizing, reviewing, and producing documents.

Redact. The permanent deletion of data from documents. Documents are redacted in order to remove privileged information, maintain privacy, or protect intellectual property.

Trial Graphics. Animation, diagrams, visuals, or other persuasive graphics used by lawyers to help explain complex technology, issues or situations to jury members during a trial.
